Journey Through The Bible
      Old Testament Reading:
2 Samuel 15-18
     New Testament Reading: Ephesians 6

Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand (Ephesians 6:10-13).

Christians are involved in a war of eternal proportions, but it’s an invisible fight. Throughout history, Christians have mistakenly taken up arms against many people in the name of Jesus. But our battle is not a fight against people of other religions. Neither is it a political fight against governments or political parties. And it’s not a worldly fight against another country. The fight we face is not a visible physical war, it’s an invisible spiritual battle.

Paul encourages Christians to put on God’s armor, which includes truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God. The whole armor is from God, but every believer must put on the armor for themselves. It would be foolish to have all the tools for self-protection provided by God but not wear them. Armor in the closet does no good on the battlefield.

But with all this armor and facing a terrifying enemy, Paul said three times (v11, 13, 14) the fully armed Ephesian believers were to simply stand firm! In the thick of battle, the most insane command would be to stand—unless your commander is the Lord. The strength required for spiritual warfare is found only in a relationship with the Lord. We need to be empowered in the power of His might.

As the Israelites left Egypt, Moses said to the people, don’t be afraid. Stand firm and see the Lord’s salvation that he will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today, you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you must be quiet (Exodus 14:13-14).

When King Jehoshaphat led Judah to battle against the Moabites and Ammonites, the prophet Jahaziel said, you do not have to fight this battle. Position yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord. He is with you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Tomorrow, go out to face them, for the Lord is with you (2 Chronicles 20:17).

God’s people faced insurmountable odds, and the Lord called His people to prepare for battle, but God alone caused the victory. Though our circumstances may be grim, though we may feel overwhelmed and outnumbered, we serve the mighty God. God asks us to stand in faith, clothed in the protection of His love and salvation. Trust Him with the rest!
